A SLIGHT scent of radio soap opera hovers over "These Wilder Years," a mild Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer drama that came to the Palace yesterday. And, of all people, hard-boiled James Cagney finds himself in the focal role that gives off the strongest aroma of sentimentality.
Mr. Cagney is cast as a big steel man who has finally taken it into his head to try to locate his illegitimate son who was born some twenty years ago. It seems that, for all his power and money, he is a lonely middle-aged man who wants to have the pleasure of imparting affection and assistance to his own child.
Well, of course, rectifying his old errors is easier said than done, and this he learns to his deep humiliation when he tries to buy or bulldoze what he wants. Through a foundling hospital director, whom Barbara Stanwyck plays, he is made to see that the feelings and wishes of his son are more important than his own.
Thus rebuked, he concludes by adopting a 16-year-old girl who herself has an illegitimate baby. He becomes a father and a grandfather in one swoop.
The intent of this little drama is lofty enough, as one can see, and Mr. Cagney and Miss Stanwyck go at it with becoming restraint and goodwill. But the story is hackneyed and slushy and Roy Rowland's direction is so slow and pictorially uninteresting that the picture is mawkish and dull. Betty Lou Keim as the adopted daughter and Don Dubbins as the illegitimate son represent the younger generation quietly and attractively.
