Marvin Gaye 1977 San Bernardino, CA Concert Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising Motown's great Marvin Gaye performing at the National Orange Auditorium in San Bernardino, California on Thursday evening, August 11, 1977. No opening act is given, and tickets were apparently available only through the box office and Ticketron.
This poster somewhat resembles what the Tilghman company would have printed out of Oakland, but instead it was done by Sentury Printing in the same city. Uses a 'split-fountain' inking technique which has the top half of the poster printed in black, and then morphing down into red for the bottom half.
Measures a little under 17" x 22" and grades to Very Good condition. Close examination shows copious horizontal stress creases throughout the poster, but they don't break color and they're barely visible on the back. Their strongest presence is probably around "11th." Single tack holes in the top two corners, as well as bumping creases in the upper right one; and one pinhole at the bottom, in the center under "Printing." Verso has tape lifts in all four corners from when it was mounted.
Untimely Death:
Gaye intervened in a fight between his parents on the afternoon of April 1, 1984, in the family house in the West Adams district of Los Angeles, and he became involved in a physical altercation with his father, Marvin Gay Sr. who shot Gaye twice, once in the chest, piercing his heart, and then into Gaye's shoulder. The shooting took place in Gaye's bedroom at 12:38 p.m. The first shot proved fatal. Gaye was pronounced dead at 1:01 p.m. after his body arrived at California Hospital Medical Center, one day short of his 45th birthday.
After Gaye's funeral, his body was cremated at Forest Lawn Memorial Park-Hollywood Hills; his ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean. Gay Sr. was initially charged with first degree murder, but the charges were reduced to voluntary manslaughter following a diagnosis of a brain tumor. He was given a suspended six-year sentence and probation. He died at a nursing home in 1998.
Attempted biopics:
There have been several attempts to adapt Gaye's life story into a feature film. After about five failed attempts, On June 18, 2018, it was reported that American rapper Dr. Dre was in talks to produce a biopic about the singer. In June 2021, it was announced that the film Dre would be producing was greenlighted by Warner Bros. Pictures and would be directed by Allen Hughes for a projected 2023 release.
