A first in 40 years collecting !

Whenever anyone has asked me “what is your favorite movie”, my answer has typically been “The Wizard of OZ”.   However, about four years ago, I saw for the first time “The Grapes of Wrath”, and the answer to that question has since changed.    Recently we acquired a particularly RARE Treasure from this 1940 Pre-WWII masterpiece.  Namely, Three VERY RARE Original Vintage JUMBO Lobby Cards.  This is one of the three we have listed and as you can see from the enlargeable image above it is simply breathtaking.  And, if you’ve seen the film you know WHY this is one of the most dramatic and significant scenes!

Henry Fonda gives one of his greatest performances as Tom Joad, eldest son of a desperate sharecropper family that flees the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma and heads to California, only to find worse problems there. Academy Awards were given to director John Ford and supporting actress Jane Darwell, as Ma Joad. Based on the Pulitzer Prize Winning novel by John Steinbeck, this has become one of the most acclaimed and beloved classics of the cinema. This beautiful Close-up protrait jumbo lobby card features one of the more poignant scenes as the family is confronted by evil...

NOTE: Jumbo Lobby Cards had a very limited life span in the movie industry and were only issued in the 1930s and 40s before being discontinued.
When seen and embraced in person you will immediately notice these Jumbo lobby cards are on a higher quality of thick stock professional photograph paper and hence why the colors are so rich and vibrant compared to regular lobby cards.   And the larger size makes them even more stunning and remarkable.    The first we have ever seen or owned!

Jumbo Lobby Card History:

Jumbo lobby cards were issued primarily for major productions. The jumbo lobby card measured 14" x 17" and were issued either singly or in sets of varying numbers. Unlike standard and mini lobby card sets that were also issued in portrait layout (vertical) whereas regular lobby cards were all Landscape (horizontal). . They normally featured major scenes from the film with a small amount of credit information.

Jumbo lobby cards were made for most movies in the 1930s to 1940s. They were larger than regular lobby cards (usually 14x17 inches), and had several other differences. One is that they were quite often printed without borders (called a "full bleed"). Another is that they were sometimes horizontal (as are regular lobby cards), but were also sometimes vertical (and a set could contain some of each). Jumbo lobby cards were made in full sets of eight, and sometimes there were the same (or similar) scenes as in the regular set, but often they had entirely different scenes, and often entirely different border art. They are far more rare than regular lobby cards, and yet because few collectors know of them, the demand historical has not been as high as regular lobby cards.  However, as collectors have become more aware of this highly Scarce pieces of Movie History, a dramatic demand shift seems to have taken place.

An extraordinarily rare jumbo lobby card for “Dracula (Universal) sold for nearly five times its estimate to bring $192,000 at Auction on Nov. 23, 2019.    I know this would eventually happen because Jumbo Lobby cards are stunning and typically have superior quality including brighter beautiful colors, crisper high quality images, full color bleed and larger size then regular lobby cards.   Not to mention they only had about a 20 years lifespan, being phased out in the 1940s.   It’s hard to believe these spectacular superior Jumbo lobby cards were discontinued while the smaller less exciting lobby cards survived for about 80 years, which is most likely because of the more accommodating smaller size and less movie theater space required

As you can see from the “Grapes of Wrath” jumbo cards, they put the regular lobby cards to shame!  And the secret is out.  These under valued Jumbo cards have skyrocketed in value over the past couple years.
