Civil War Letter
Fort Adams, Newport, RI, 1863

Terrific antique Civil War letter on beautiful Civil Ware stationary.  Significant content as author mentions one of the most famous Civil War Generals visiting his camp, “Old General Wool”.

Fort Adams letter:
Civil War soldier's letter, 4 pgs., approx. 5: x 7-3/4", dated at Fort Adams, R.I., Feb. 8, 1863, signed "your grateful son", to his father. 

Written on patriotic stationery with a red & blue illustrated of Lady Liberty, and with "DEDICATED TO THE GALLANT DEFENDERS OF OUR NATIONAL UNION" printed in red & blue star spangled letters. 

Good content, including writing of their having an inspection by "old  Gen. Wool" (John E. Wool, at age 77 at the start of the war, was the oldest General on either side of the conflict).

Includes (spelling corrected): 

"Dear Father, 

I received your letter the 6th. I was very glad to hear from you and hear how you was getting along. But I find that you are all sick with the whooping cough...

I am well at present...Things is very high here. Butter 30 cents a lb., flour 12 dollars per Barrel...

I am glad to hear that you have fresh pork. We get fresh beef and old bacon and beans. Bread plenty and some coffee. 

We had a General Inspection the fifth. Old General Wool was here.

I feel kind of sleepy just now. I was to church this forenoon. I was on guard last night and it snowed about four inches deep, and this morning we had some fun a snow balling, I give you notice. 

We fired 13 guns the 5th for General Wool, and I give you notice it made some noise.

I put 3 photographs in this letter. I put a ten cent bill in for Millard and tell him that I will send some more before long...."

Condition:   Extraordinary.  This historic letter was obviously well preserved as the ink has maintained a gorgeous light aging and letter is pristine. Amazing for a 160 year old letter !!
