The 1949 Casablanca Title Card: A Masterpiece of Cinematic Art Beyond Its Historical Significance

About 7-8 years ago I discovered, for the first time in 40 years collecting, what was the most spectacular, stunning vintage  movie poster for the iconic WW2 era classic film “Casablanca”.   It was the 1949 re-release Title Card.     It was more impressive than the original 1942 Title Card. 

The 1949 re-release title lobby card for Casablanca is extraordinary and often regarded as superior to the original 1942 card due to its vibrant design, cultural significance, and extreme rarity. While the 1942 card is iconic, the 1949 version stands out with its striking use of color and more polished graphics that amplify the romantic allure of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, reflecting the film's ascended status as a cultural phenomenon. Adding to its allure, the 1949 card is significantly rarer than the 1942 original, making it a prized collectible for enthusiasts. Note:   While auction records show about ten 1942 Title Cards that have sold over the past 20 years, only One 1949 surfaced on the market about Eight years ago and sold for just under $3000.  This gem was discovered in Casablanca’s home country of France.     A 1949 Insert with the same artwork of Bogart looking into the camera lens, which only one has ever surfaced sold at auction, sold in 2018 for $29,000.

Condition:  The Title Card had only One issue,  the blank borders had been trimmed. Hence, I had the borders professionally and expertly restored.  The card image area was Not touched at all.  As a matter of fact, the card image area was in Amazing flawless condition with, as you can see, a beautiful slight vintage patina.  The previous owner, aside from trimming the borders took meticulous care of this nearly 80 year old historical treasure and kept it away from sunlight, evident with its original stunning colors!.   

The back of the card tells a story with great provenance.  First,  the original studio/distribution service stamp is present , which is Very rare on lobby cards.  

Stamp reads,   “PLEASE RETURN MATERIAL AFTER PLAYDATE TO THEATER ADVERTISING CO, 704 NEW JERSEY AVE, N. W.  WASHINGTON, D.C.”.    Also back has what appears to be an ownership stamp from a prominent collection.   

A piece of classic cinematic history I thought  we’d never see again!   A Gem of a Find!

After the war, Warner Brothers felt it was time to reissue their Academy Award winning love story and this great title card is from that first re-release. Far more scarce than the original title card, this is only the second copy to have ever been offered for public acquisition.
